The wait for a new sports facility in Spruce Grove is almost over.

City Council approved a new Civic Centre during last night’s council meeting.

“The process we’ve been through, the number of analysis that we’ve done, its been going on six to seven years,” said Mayor Stuart Houston. “The new approach is really exciting for the community.”

The proposed facility would include two rinks and options for a theatre, library, and multi-purpose rooms.

A park-and-ride feature was also discussed, something Councillor Jeff Acker said would help in the long run.

“You can get on a local bus to get there and there’s adequate parking. I think it will resolve some of those concerns of where we’re going.”

The cost of the project is estimated to be between 43 to 49-million dollars.

The city will now work on its preliminary design to identify the final size, cost estimates, amenities, and location.
